The Ascension of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He returns to the Father.

Many might find themselves like the disciples of Jesus in the first reading of the Acts of the Apostles. They experience Jesus’ Ascension and are looking up into the sky. Ascension is not about looking up. Jesus did not go off into the stratosphere, nor has He has gone away to a far-off place. Jesus in union with His Father is outside time, place and space as we know it. God is greater than we can imagine. It is this union with the Father that He had from the Beginning. They are co-equal in essence. Jesus in returning to the Father is not leaving us but rather He returns to that place from which the Father had sent him. See. John 1:1 Having returned to the Father, He still remains very real and present with us and the Church throughout the world.

The Ascension is about the mandate to the Church. Although Jesus ascended to the place in union with the Father, He has a mission that is not yet complete. Christ needs us to roll up ourselves and get to work. Luke in his second book, the Acts of the Apostles, is instructing us how we are be as His disciples. The disciples are wondering with last minute questions, What are we to do next? Aren’t you going to kick out the Romans before you go? “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”

“as they were looking on,
he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight.
While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going,
suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them.
They said, “Men of Galilee,
why are you standing there looking at the sky?
This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven
will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.”

You see they were unsure as to their next steps. The vision and idea of Jesus as their Messiah did not pan out as they had expected. Things seemed strange and they were wondering what to do. Jesus gave them a clear mandate that they were not to be simply looking off into the sky, in wonder and confusion but there is a direct purpose and direction for their discipleship.

“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

As I think of what this feast means Jesus gives a directive to His disciples to “GO”. The get out and move beyond their fears, move beyond their comfort zones. There is a new world that needs to be formed, a new message that comes from a new power. We need to be actively engaged in the lives of all people who seek to live in the power of the resurrected Lord and to move forward in the power of the Spirit. Ascension is about getting busy church. Busy about the kingdom of God and teaching, blessing and journeying with people as they walk in God’s favor and anointing. We are not to simply accept things as they are, with a “there is nothing I can do about it” attitude. Rather we are called to see the reality that faces us as an opportunity to be not only agents of change, but creators of a New Reality.

Recently I was told by someone, and I’ll paraphrase it, ” Welcome to your new reality.” My response is, I don’t simply enter into a new reality, rather, with God given gifts I am called to create a new reality. Ascension is about responding to Christ’s call to “Go and make disciples” to creating a new reality. Not accepting the reality as it is, but being an agent for change seeking to create a reality where all are love, all are valued, all are respected and all are included at the table. Let’s be Kingdom builders. Don’t accept the reality of the challenges and crises’ that we shape our reality, let’s seek the change that we want to see and let it begin within our own hearts.

A Ascensão de nosso Senhor e Salvador Jesus Cristo. Ele retorna ao Pai.

Muitos podem se encontram como os discípulos de Jesus na primeira leitura dos Atos dos Apóstolos. Eles econtra a Ascensão de Jesus e estão olhando para o céu. Ascensão não é sobre olhar para cima. Jesus não foi para a estratosfera, nem foi para um lugar distante. Jesus em união com Seu Pai está fora do tempo, lugar e espaço como o conhecemos. Deus é maior do que podemos imaginar. É essa união com o Pai que Ele teve desde o Início. Eles são iguais em essência. Jesus, ao retornar ao Pai, não está nos deixando, mas sim retorna ao lugar de onde o Pai o enviou. Veja. João 1:1 Tendo retornado ao Pai, Ele ainda permanece muito real e presente conosco e com a Igreja em todo o mundo.

A Ascensão é sobre o mandato para a Igreja. Embora Jesus tenha ascendido ao lugar em união com o Pai, Ele tem uma missão que ainda não está completa. Cristo precisa que nos enrolemos e trabalhemos. Sâo Lucas em seu segundo livro, Os Atos dos Apóstolos, está nos instruindo como somos como Seus discípulos. Os discípulos estão se perguntando com perguntas de última hora: O que devemos fazer a seguir? Você não vai expulsar os romanos antes de ir? “Senhor, neste momento você vai restaurar o reino a Israel?”

“Como eles estavam olhando, Ele foi levantado, e uma nuvem o tirou da vista deles.Enquanto eles olhavam atentamente para o céu enquanto ele ia,De repente, dois homens vestidos com roupas brancas ficaram ao lado deles.Eles disseram: “Homens da Galiléia,Por que você está parado lá olhando para o céu?Este Jesus que foi levado de você para o céuRetornará da mesma maneira que você o viu indo para o céu.”

Você vê que eles não tinham certeza de seus próximos passos. A visão e a ideia de Jesus como seu Messias não saíram como eles esperavam. As coisas pareciam estranhas e eles estavam se perguntando o que fazer. Jesus deu a eles um mandato claro de que eles não deveriam estar simplesmente olhando para o céu, maravilhados e confusos, mas há um propósito e direção diretos para seu discipulado.

“Vá, portanto, e faça discípulos de todas as nações, Batizando-os em nome do Pai, E do Filho, e do Espírito Santo, Ensinando-os a observar tudo o que eu lhe ordenei. E eis que estou sempre com você, até o fim dos anos.”

Ao pensar no que esta festa significa, Jesus dá uma instrução a Seus discípulos para “IR”. Os saem e vão além de seus medos, vão além de suas areas de conforto. Há um novo mundo que precisa ser formado, uma nova mensagem que vem de um novo poder. Precisamos estar ativamente envolvidos na vida de todas as pessoas que buscam viver no poder do Senhor ressuscitado e avançar no poder do Espírito. Ascensão é sobre ficar com a igreja travalhando. Ocupado com o reino de Deus e ensinando, abençoando e aproximando as pessoas enquanto elas caminham a favor e unção de Deus. Não devemos simplesmente aceitar as coisas como elas são, com uma atitude de “não há nada que eu possa fazer sobre isso”. Em vez disso, somos chamados a ver a realidade que nos enfrenta como uma oportunidade de ser não apenas agentes de mudança, mas criadores de uma Nova Realidade.
