The eyes of justice moves from actions of the unjust and plotting against the poor that we saw last week, to the injustice of complacency when the plight of the poor and suffering is overlooked and ignored. You see it isn’t only the evil injustice that is planned and executed to steal from the poor that is great cause for concern and call for justice, but it is also the complacency with those live in a way that ignores and fails to recognize both the needs of the poor, but also the conditions and context of poverty.

You see true justice recognizes and calls out the unjust disregard for those in need but it actually goes deeper. True justice seeks out to address the deeper causes of injustice and attempts to eradicate the unjust system to bring about a more equitable society.

This week we find the Prophet Amos addressing those who enjoy their wealth while ignoring the suffering, struggling that surrounds them. The image of the Amos reading is one of excessive wealth squandered while those around them suffer. Israel is in collapse and they are oblivious to their plight.

We see both in Amos and the Parable of Lazarus and the Rich man what is wrong and unjust is not their wealth. The outright disregard and blindness to the plight of the poor. Lazarus is completely ignored, the only ones who give him comfort are the dogs who lick his sores. We cannot ignore and turn a blind eye to those who suffer. At this time the poor are being taken and robbed of what they need as their lives collapse around them, from the poor of places like Mississippi, to the refugees at our borders, to those who cannot afford housing.

We need one another more now than ever. The wealthy can have a critical role in the work of justice by sharing out of their abundance. So much wealth was built on the backs of the poor, but they don’t reap the benefits. This is why the truth our history as a nation is so important. Both slavery and the continuation of colonialism has strengthen the wealthy and continues to impact the poor and shapes the context for the cycle of poverty in our society and world.

We continue to evaluate our limited resources and approach those who can support our mercy ministry and our work for justice. Out of our poverty we seek to change structures so the needs of persons on the peripheries are not only served, but we seek to bring them from a peripheral position to a place where are brought into the centrality of life. They too must be made to sit at the table to determine their future and destiny. In valuing each other let us seek recognize not only that the lives of the poor matter, but that we together are woven together into a tapestry where all can find a place to call their own.

Os olhos da justiça se movem das ações dos injustos e contra os pobres que vimos na semana passada, para a injustiça da complacência quando a situação dos pobres e do sofrimento é negligenciada e ignorada. Você vê que não é apenas a injustiça maligna que é planejada e executada para roubar dos pobres que é uma grande causa de preocupação e apelo à justiça, mas também é a complacência com aqueles que vivem de uma maneira que ignora e não reconhece tanto as necessidades dos pobres, mas também as condições e o contexto da pobreza.

Veja a verdadeira justiça reconhece e chama o desrespeito injusto pelos necessitados, mas na verdade vai mais fundo. A verdadeira justiça procura abordar as causas mais profundas da injustiça e tenta erradicar o sistema injusto para criar uma sociedade mais equitativa.

Esta semana, encontramos o Profeta Amos abordando aqueles que desfrutam de sua riqueza enquanto ignoram o sofrimento, lutando que os cerca. A imagem da leitura de Amos é de riqueza excessiva desperdiçada enquanto aqueles ao seu redor sofrem. Israel está em colapso e eles estão alheios à sua situação.

Vemos tanto em Amos quanto na Parábola de Lázaro e no homem rico o que é errado e injusto não é a riqueza deles. O desrespeito absoluto e a cegueira à situação dos pobres. Lázaro é completamente ignorado, os únicos que lhe dão conforto são os cães que lambem suas feridas. Não podemos ignorar e fechar os olhos para aqueles que sofrem. Neste momento, os pobres estão sendo levados e roubados do que precisam à medida que suas vidas desmoronam ao seu redor, desde os pobres de lugares como o Mississippi, até os refugiados em nossas fronteiras, até aqueles que não podem pagar moradia.

Precisamos um do outro mais agora do que nunca. Os ricos podem ter um papel crítico no trabalho da justiça, compartilhando sua abundância. Tanta riqueza foi construída nas costas dos pobres, mas eles não colhem os benefícios. É por isso que a verdade da nossa história como nação é tão importante. Tanto a escravidão quanto a continuação do colonialismo fortaleceram os ricos e continuam a impactar os pobres e moldam o contexto para o ciclo da pobreza em nossa sociedade e mundo.

Continuamos a avaliar nossos recursos limitados e abordar aqueles que podem apoiar nosso ministério de misericórdia e nosso trabalho pela justiça. Fora da nossa pobreza, procuramos mudar as estruturas para que as necessidades das pessoas nas periferias não sejam apenas atendidas, mas procuramos trazê-las de uma posição periférica para um lugar onde sejam incluidos para a centralidade da vida. Eles também devem ser feitos para se sentar à mesa para determinar seu futuro e destino. Ao valorizar uns aos outros, vamos procurar reconhecer não apenas que a vida dos pobres é importante, mas que juntos estamos entrelaçados em uma tapeçaria onde todos podem encontrar um lugar para chamar de seu.
