Today we are invited to listen with the ear of the heart.   I would like to look at the context of what has taken place to better understand hearing God speak to us in silence and simplicity.  Today we find God’s Prophet at Mount Sinai, or Horeb after having slain the priests of the false god Baal, who failed in bringing down fire to burn the offering. The reason he had done this was because Jezebel was pushing the pagan cult of Baal on the people of Israel.   Elijah the prophet is chased by, Jezebel’s  army and takes up hiding on the mountain.   God informs Elijah that he will be passing by.

What we learn is two things, the first is that God is not always found in great and powerful moments like earthquakes, and powerful winds, but rather God can be heard in the simple and smallest of ways.   Here God comes and speaks to the prophet in the whisper of a breeze a gently wind.   The second is to listen to God and listen for Him to speak.

Elijah having slain 450 priests of Baal, is told by God that he will no longer be serving as a prophet.  We cannot look at this by just letting it slide by, Elijah, God’s Prophet had killed them, and so God replaces him, terminates him  and turns over the prophetic role to Elisha.

Let us be encouraged that even in the midst of violence, injustice and oppression God speaks and acts with justice and right.  We are called like Elijah to listen to God’s speak to us and as God does, act rightly as he entrusts the prophetic role to Elisha.   In a time when people are seeking justice, we cannot respond with violence and death, rather we must seek a path that brings about effective lasting change and call forth those who can do right as true leaders and modern prophets for our day.

After Jesus feeds the thousands he returns to that place of solitude and prayer.   This a teaching moment for us.  Jesus teaches us to move from prayer to power and back again.   Jesus was in a deserted place, a place of prayer having recently heard of the murder of his cousin.  He then moves from that solitude and prayer and acts with power for the people by healing and feeding them.   He again returns to solitude and prayer and yet  again he acts with power, while his disciples are being tossed by the winds and the waves Jesus comes into their midst. He is above the power of the storm and tell the disciples,  “Do not be Afraid.”

Even in the midst of the storm he extends the invitation to Peter, to come out into the storm.   Peter steps out but he is overcome by the wind and the waves, he takes his focus off of Jesus and is overwhelmed by the magnitude of sea, waves and wind   Jesus then reaches out and grabs him, saves him and pulls him up.

You see Church in the midst off all that’s happening from the Pandemic to the long history of oppression and prejudice, Jesus is sill in the boat.  But we must listen to Him, keep our focus on Him, allow him to speak to our hearts and take us by the hand.   Jesus is in the boat, do not be afraid!

OIGAN Y ESCUCHEN CON EL OIDO DEL CORAZÓN
Hoy estamos invitados a escuchar con el oído del corazón. Me gustaría mirar el contexto de lo que ha sucedido para comprender mejor al escuchar a Dios hablarnos en silencio y sencillez. Hoy encontramos al Profeta de Dios en el Monte Sinaí, o Horeb, después de haber matado a los sacerdotes del falso dios Baal, quien no logró apagar el fuego para quemar la ofrenda. La razón por la que había hecho esto fue porque Jezabel estaba impulsando el culto pagano de Baal al pueblo de Israel. El profeta Elías es
perseguido por el ejército de Jezabel y comienza a esconderse en la montaña. Dios le informa a Elías lo
que pasará.

Cita de Benedict-of-Nursia: ”Oigan y escuchen con el oído-del corazón”.

Lo que aprendemos son dos cosas: la primera es que Dios no siempre se encuentra en momentos grandes y poderosos como terremotos y vientos poderosos, sino que Dios puede estar escuchado de la manera más simple y pequeña. Aquí viene Dios y le habla al profeta con el susurro de una brisa, un viento suave. El segundo es escuchar a Dios y escuchar que habla.

Después de que Elías había matado 450 sacerdotes de Baal, Dios le dice que ya no será profeta. No podemos ver esto simplemente dejándolo pasar. El Profeta de Dios de Elías los había matado, y entonces Dios lo reemplaza, lo termina y le entrega el papel profético a Eliseo.

Animémonos porque incluso en medio de la violencia, la injusticia y la opresión, Dios habla y actúa con justicia y rectitud. Somos llamados como Elías para escuchar la palabra de Dios y, cómo Dios lo hace, actuar correctamente al confiar el papel profético a Eliseo. En una época en la que la gente busca justicia, no podemos responder con violencia y muerte, sino que debemos buscar un camino que produzca un cambio duradero y efectivo y convocar a aquellos que pueden hacer lo correcto como
verdaderos líderes, profetas modernos de nuestros días.

´´NO TEMÁIS”
Después de que Jesús alimenta a miles, regresa a ese lugar de soledad y oración. Este es un momento de enseñanza para nosotros. Jesús nos enseña a pasar de la oración al poder y viceversa. Jesús estaba en un lugar desierto, un lugar de oración habiendo escuchado recientemente del asesinato de su primo. Luego se retira de esa soledad y oración y actúa con poder para la gente. Vuelve a la soledad y a la oración, y
mientras sus discípulos son sacudidos por los vientos y las olas, Jesús entra en medio de ellos, está por encima del poder de la tormenta y les dice a los discípulos: “No temáis”;.

Incluso en medio de la tormenta, extiende la invitación a Pedro para que salga a la tormenta. Pedro sale,pero el viento y las olas lo vencieron. Se apartó de Jesús y fue vencido por la magnitud del mar, las olas y el viento. Jesús se acerca y lo agarra, lo salva y lo levanta.

Ves a la Iglesia en medio de todo lo que está sucediendo desde la Pandemia hasta la larga historia de opresión y prejuicio, Jesús sigue en el barco. Pero debemos escucharlo, mantener nuestro enfoque en Él, permitirle que hable a nuestro corazón y que nos tome de la mano. Jesús está en el bote, no tengas miedo
