Today as we celebrate and  recall a Man who stood on the peripheries and sought to erase the margins of society by simply loving those who found themselves disconnected, due to poverty, racism or sickness.    San Martin De Porres de Lima Peru

The scriptures today show us Jesus on the peripheries reaching those on the margins.   Those on the margins are those not included shut our and cut off from those within the community.    So as Jesus travels in the Gospel of Luke to Jerusalem he is going through Jericho.  This is an important city, a large city but recall it is a city of importance.   Recall how the Israelite army marched around it until it fell to the ground.    It is this great city when on the road their a travel was attacked by robbers and left for dead and a good Samaritan comes to his aid and was truly a neighbor to him.

So in Luke 19 Jesus is traveling and there is a man trying to see Jesus.  The man’s name is Zacchaeus and he’s hated by all because he is the tax collector.   Although a wealthy man, he is on the margins of that society because he got his wealth by working for the Romans and shaking people down.  In today’s world a basic thug.  He would have been hated by all, despised by all, feared and associated himself with others from the margins of society.

In his desire to see Jesus, Jesus takes a further step and invites himself into his home, “today I must stay at your house.”   Jesus recognition of Zacchaeus transforms him from being on the peripheries, and the margins are erased because his heart is moved to generosity and restitution.   In giving back what he has stolen four times over he seeks to be reunited with the community.    He is no longer on the peripheries, Jesus has just erased his being on the  margins.

We are called to go to the Peripheries, not so that we feel good about serving the poor, not so that we can say ” look what I did”.   We go the peripheries and when we stand with those who are marginalized the margins are erased and we find ourselves standing together.   This is what happened to little Zacchaeus and it happens to us.   Many are afraid, fear to go out is because we are too caught up in ourselves.   When we genuinely seek the good of the other, our going out changes our  hearts and restores to the center those on the peripheries.   Like Martin DePorres a Dominican Friar,  Mother African and father a Spanish soldier, he sought to stand on the peripheries and erase the margins to bring people back into the circle of the community.  He himself marginalized sought to erase the margins by Standing on the Peripheries.

Hoy, cuando celebramos y recordamos a un Hombre que se encontraba en la periferia y buscaba borrar los márgenes de la sociedad simplemente amando a aquellos que se encontraban desconectados, debido a la pobreza, el racismo o la enfermedad. San Martín de Porres de Lima Perú
Las escrituras de hoy nos muestran a Jesús en las periferias llegando a aquellos en los márgenes. Los que están en los márgenes son aquellos que no están incluidos, desconectados y separados de los que están dentro de la comunidad. Entonces, cuando Jesús viaja en el Evangelio de Lucas a Jerusalén, está pasando por Jericó. Esta es una ciudad importante, una gran ciudad, pero recuerde que es una gran ciudad. Recordemos cómo el ejército israelita marchó a su alrededor hasta que cayó al suelo. Es esta gran ciudad cuando en el camino durante su viaje fue atacado por ladrones y dado por muerto y un buen samaritano acude en su ayuda y fue verdaderamente un vecino para él.
Entonces, en Lucas 19, Jesús viaja y hay un hombre tratando de ver a Jesús. El hombre se llama Zaqueo y todos lo odian porque es el recaudador de impuestos. Aunque es un hombre rico, está al margen de esa sociedad porque obtuvo su riqueza trabajando para los romanos y explotando a la gente. En el mundo de hoy un matón básico. Habría sido odiado por todos, despreciado por todos, temido y asociado con otros desde los márgenes de la sociedad.
En su deseo de ver a Jesús, Jesús da un paso más y se invita a sí mismo a su hogar, “hoy debo quedarme en su casa”. El reconocimiento de Jesús de Zaqueo lo transforma de estar en las periferias y los márgenes se borran porque su corazón se mueve hacia la generosidad y la restitución. Al devolver lo que ha robado cuatro veces, busca reunirse con la comunidad. Ya no está en las periferias, Jesús acaba de borrar su ser en los márgenes.
Estamos llamados a ir a las Periferias, no para que nos sintamos bien al servir a los pobres, no para que podamos decir “mira lo que hice”. Vamos a las periferias y cuando estamos con los marginados, los márgenes se borran y nos encontramos juntos. Esto es lo que le pasó al pequeño Zaqueo y nos pasa a nosotros. Muchos tienen miedo, el miedo a salir es porque estamos demasiado atrapados en nosotros mismos. Cuando realmente buscamos el bien del otro, nuestra salida cambia nuestros corazones y restaura al centro a aquellos en las periferias. Al igual que Martin DePorres, un fraile dominicano, madre africana y padre de un soldado español, buscó pararse en las periferias y borrar los márgenes para que la gente volviera al círculo de la comunidad. Él mismo marginado buscó borrar los márgenes de pie en las periferias.
